The Historic Preservation Commission works with the Historical Society to list sites on the National Register of Historic Places and to promote and advocate preservation of the irreplaceable historic buildings in Watertown and Codington County.  All or parts of twelve blocks in Uptown Watertown make up the National Register listed Watertown Commercial Historic District.  Of the 115 buildings within its boundaries, 67 of them are considered architecturally significant.  Throughout the county there are also 35 other buildings, five farmsteads and two bridges that are listed individually on the National Register.
